Comic Con Gets A Bit of Cirque

By Angie Quidim

On Thursday, the famed acrobatic group, Cirque du Solei had a debut performance outside the walls of Petco Park in downtown San Diego.  The troup presented Ka; a show currently showing in Las Vegas at the MGM grand. Ka is a story about a twin brother and sister that were seperated by a war incited by the Emperor’s Chief Archer and his soldiers.  During this epic battle the brother and his imperial troops were enslaved and his sister was rescued only to be stranded in a magical forest.  The short performance at Comic Con was a sample of the epic battle which ensues.

The short performance can be seen here

In the video you can only get a small idea of how grand the presentation truly was. There was a short intro to the story in the beginning, ala comic book illustrations. The screen
exploded” revealing the beginnings of war where the opponents faced each other on the battlefield.   The acrobats were sideways against the screen to give the impression they were flush with the stadium wall.  The projector supplied the special effects of the battle from waves to explosive hits.  There was definitely the signatures of a Vegas show in this presentation with the elaborate sound and lighting.  One thing to note about this was that it was another activity done outside the con ( no comic con badge needed).  This was definitely something you had to be there to experience.

KÀ BY CIRQUE DU SOLEIL TO PRESENT GRAVITY-DEFYING STUNT FOR OPENING NIGHT OF COMIC-CON

WHO: The resident production of KÀ by Cirque du Soleil at MGM Grand in Las Vegas will make their first ever appearance at Comic-Con with a free public performance on the opening night of Comic-Con.  Participating performers and representatives from the show’s Artistic and Technical teams are available for interviews before and after the performance.

WHAT:A display of dazzling 3-D projections created especially for Comic-Con will tell the adventurous tale of KÀ by turning the façade of PETCO Park, home of the San Diego Padres, into an interactive performance space combining projections and live acrobatics. The audience will get a bird’s-eye view of a fierce battle pitting the Imperial Twins of KÀ and their allies against an enemy warrior tribe as the scene plays out on the surface of a 90-foot high vertical stage. The event is free and open to all Comic-Con attendees.

KÀ is a gravity-defying production featuring an innovative blend of high-flying feats, puppetry, projections and martial arts. KÀ unfolds on a custom-built, colossal, 360-degree rotating stage which forms the backdrop for this cinematic journey of aerial adventure and perpendicular acrobatics.
