Relativity Media and Atlas Entertainment to Bring Voltron™

Relativity Media’s President of Worldwide Production Tucker Tooley announced today the studio has optioned the feature film rights for Voltron™ from World Event Productions, and will adapt the live-action big screen version from the 1984 cult-classic animated series Voltron: Defender of the Universe™. The project was brought to Relativity through their deal with Atlas Entertainment’s Charles Roven and Richard Suckle, whose company will shepherd the project.

In Voltron™, an elite battle force defends the fate of mankind in the spectacular action adventure. Five young warriors are responsible for the future of the galaxy when they become pilots of a battalion of ultra-high-tech Robot Lions, powerful vessels with the ability to join together to form a fearsome mega-weapon known as “Voltron”.

The original series, based on the Japanese anime properties Beast King GoLion and Kikou Kantai Dairugger XV, aired in the United States for two years and has been described as an “international pop-culture hit” that has garnered a large following over the last 25 years. In recent years, the Voltron™ property has sold over 300,000 DVDs, established numerous apparel and consumer product deals and has spawned a highly-successful TV series, Voltron Force™, which became Nicktoon’s highest-rated debut ever on June 16, 2011. Voltron™ will be making its first-ever panel debut at Comic-Con International in San Diego on Thursday, July 21 where they will feature a presentation of all-new and classic Voltron™ content.

The live-action film will be produced by Atlas Entertainment’s Roven (The Dark Knight) and Richard Suckle (The International), along with Kickstart Entertainment’s Jason Netter (Wanted). World Events Productions’ Ted Koplar (Voltron Force) will executive produce. The script is being penned by Thomas Dean Donnelly (Conan the Barbarian) and Joshua Oppenheimer (Sahara).

Tooley said, “For nearly three decades, Voltron™ has captured the minds of a nostalgically loyal and rabid fan base and has long been considered a hotly-pursued project. We are beyond excited World Event Productions and Atlas Entertainment have placed their trust and faith in Relativity to bring this coveted property to the big screen, and usher in a new generation of devoted fans.” Tooley added, “With Chuck and Richard’s experience producing tentpoles, they are the perfect producers to bring this potential franchise to theaters.”

Roven, co-founder, Atlas Entertainment said, “It’s incredibly gratifying to officially announce the development of the live-action Voltron™ movie this week, given its recent resurgence and the start of Comic-Con.”

Suckle, producer, Atlas Entertainment added, “I know there’s been a lot of rumors and speculation about this movie, so it’s great to finally confirm to all the Voltron™ fans everywhere that we’re coming for them.”

World Events Productions was represented in the deal by UTA.

Looking ahead, Relativity will release David Ellis’ Shark Night 3D on September 2, 2011, followed by Marc Forster’s Machine Gun Preacher on September 23, 2011, then the highly-anticipated Immortals on November 11, 2011, starring Henry Cavill, Stephen Dorff, Isabel Lucas, Freida Pinto, Luke Evans and Kellan Lutz with John Hurt and Mickey Rourke. The studio is in production on its Untitled Snow White Project (in theatres March 16, 2012), starring Lily Collins as Snow White, Oscar®-winner Julia Roberts as the evil Queen, Armie Hammer as Prince Andrew Alcott, and Nathan Lane as the hapless and bungling servant to the Queen. Relativity’s expansive 2012 slate also includes Haywire (in theatres January 20, 2012), Act of Valor (in theatres February 17, 2012), The Raven (in theatres March 9, 2012), Untitled Farrelly/Wessler Project (in theatres April 13, 2012), House at the End of the Street (in theatres April 20, 2012), Safe Haven (in theatres June 1, 2012) and Hunter Killer (in theatres December 21, 2012).

Movies on Demand Makes First Appearance at Comic-Con!]

Across the street from next week’s Comic-Con International in San Diego, the Hard Rock Hotel will be a buzz of celebrity and excitement as one of the core locations for a number of high-profile entertainment outlets. This year a new entrant, Movies On Demand (MOD), the national platform for ordering movies via cable TV, also will make the famed hotel its home base from July 21-23. MOD is a collaboration of major movie studios and cable operators around the country promoting the On Demand platform as the best way to watch the hottest Hollywood hits from home via remote control.

The “MOD Lounge” will house invitation-only celebrity media appearances by Jason Momoa (“Conan the Barbarian”) and renowned movie expert Leonard Maltin (REELZCHANNEL), along with others to be announced. In addition, contest winners will be invited to the MOD Lounge to attend a special promotional screening of Paramount Pictures’ hit animated blockbuster “Rango,” which premieres on MOD July 29. Throughout the conference, the lounge also will be a place for movie fans to stop by and learn more about what’s coming up on MOD, enjoy movie-themed giveaways and “green screen”
themselves into a movie scene. The MOD Lounge will also be home base for the launch of @moviesondemand on Twitter and for updates about MOD during Comic-Con and beyond on Facebook.

In addition to the activities taking place in the MOD Lounge, Time Warner Cable cameras will be covering the action-packed convention floor and capturing celebrity interviews that will become available at no additional
cost to their digital customers on the Movies On Demand channel. MOD
also will launch a national “Geekstakes,” with the grand prize being a trip to the 2012 Comic-Con, through street teams distributing scratch off cards on the plaza outside the Hard Rock Hotel, as well as online (see info below).

Participants in the Movies On Demand Lounge and surrounding activities include Time Warner Cable, Lionsgate, Paramount Pictures, Universal Pictures, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment, DreamWorks, Relativity, Warner Bros., REELZCHANNEL and others, including local San Diego cable operator Cox Communications. The MOD Lounge and surrounding promotions are created and managed by iN DEMAND, the nation’s largest distributor of Movies On Demand to cable.

Movies on Demand (MOD) is supported by a national consortium of top movie studios and top cable systems around the country working together to promote MOD on Cable as the simplest and best way to rent the newest and hottest Hollywood movies just by pushing the button on a cable remote. MOD delivers many movies in the earliest post-theatrical windows, often same day as DVD or earlier and often weeks before Netflix and Redbox. MOD films are available instantly on digital cable in SD, HD, and 3D (when available), with full DVD functionality and without the hassle of DVDs to return or late-fee worries. Some titles, especially indies, come to cable before or the same day as their theatrical release.

During Comic-Con, the MOD Lounge also will be home to press events, which require an RSVP as space is limited. Additional events will be added daily during Comic-Con. Please contact one of us below to be added to list for the following:

* Roundtable with “Conan The Barbarian” Jason Momoa, Friday, 7/22
6:30-7:15 PM

* Happy Hour with Reelz Channel’s Leonard Maltin, Host of “Maltin
On Movies” on REELZCHANNEL. Saturday, 7/23 4:30-6PM

And for the ultimate geek who can’t make it to Comic-Con, MOD will take its “Geekstakes” national, with the grand prize being a chance to win a trip to the 2012 San Diego Comic-Con. Fans can visit http://www.rentmoviesondemand.com/geekstakes
to enter for a chance to win. Comic Book/Sci-Fi/Fantasy fans also will
find great titles on MOD before other platforms, and many cable systems have special themed categories on their menus this month to celebrate Comic-Con. Here are some other upcoming titles that Comic-Con attendees might want to check out on MOD:
